This was an event that was true to the spirit of swing. At slightly before nine there was a long line of people waiting to get in. They announced that it was now nine and everyone on line would have to pay full price even though we had arrived by nine with an invitation that promised a reduced price if you arrived with the invitation before nine. Lee Sobel, the event organizer, took charge and announced that everyone on the line would pay the pre-nine price. He showed character. A person who keeps to the spirit of his word is a rare thing indeed these days.

That was one reason the elegant Supper Club was packed with swing dancers. The other reason was the bands, who were superb.

It was mostly an East Coast and Lindy event. The attendees were dressed in their finest. A word to the wise: you won't look out of place in a period suit or a tux if you attend next year's event.

The find of the night was Nicole Frydman. We all knew she could dance. The best kept secret of the year is that she can sing too. Her voice is as clear as a mellifluous bell - which only sounds like laying it on thick if you weren't there. Over twenty attendees knew a good thing when they heard one and stayed for her third set which started about 2 am. The party kept going strong until at least 3 am or so.
