On our way to Kings of Dance at City Center, a gala opening night of Sergei Danilian's showcase for four dazzling male ballet virtuosi, I was joined at the stylish Moda, midtown Italian restaurant, by Julienne Viola, General Manager of Freed of London, the renowned maker of ballet footwear, toe shoes, dancewear, character shoes, and accessories. Marco, General Manager of Moda, and Eric, Executive Chef, were quite attentive and warm, throughout our visit. Julienne enjoyed a crisp caesar salad, fresh Sicilian swordfish with spicy tomato sauce, and a melange of Italian desserts, including cool, moist, intoxicating tiramisu, served in a huge cappuccino cup, an unusual blueberry cheesecake, with fresh blueberries and rasberries, lots of creme fraiche, and a platter of assorted biscotti (which we shared with the ballet publicist).
I personally enjoyed a mixed green salad, a treasure of fish, called "trio di pesce", served hot, but like sushi, on a tiny wooden table. The tuna was totally rare, the scallop was fresh broiled, and the shrimps were wrapped in crispy bacon. The Moda decor is fascinating modern, with some green lights on tables, tiny candles on the walls, and high, cushiony booths with black backing. I shared the dessert melange, before we rushed the easy three blocks to City Center (also between 6th and 7th Avenues).
The next time you are on your way to City Center or a Broadway show, book a table at Moda, and ask for Marco. Tell him you saw them on ExploreDance.com.
