Speed Issues

All photos on ExploreDance.com are posted in two versions: a high resolution, full size version, and a low resolution, half size version. With a 24k modem connection, full size photos are likely to take about 60 seconds each to download. Half size photos should download 5 to 10 times faster, but we have not had a chance to time the downloading of these half size images with a 24k modem connection.

Using a 256k to 640k DSL connection, a full size photo should download in about 1.37 seconds. A half size photo should download in about 0.22 seconds.

Starting in November 2000, we have started using a 3.3 Megapixel camera for most of our photos. "Full Size" photos are actually half the original size, and "Half Size" photos are a quarter of the original size. Because 3.3/2 = 1.65, and the older camera was a 1.3 Megapixel camera, it follows that the newer full size pictures are slightly larger than the old full size pictures. Now you have a reason to buy a bigger monitor, as well as a faster internet connection. The detail in the larger photos is so crisp, we think it is worth the slight extra download time.

Design Issues

The ExploreDance.com web site has two parts: an editorial side, and a sales side. Editorial pages are marked by a row of leaves at the top and a row of pebbles at the bottom of each page. Editorial headlines are marked with the "green crown" graphic. Purely logistical headlines are marked with the "red swirl" graphic. Sales pages are marked by a stained glass bar at the top, and a row of houses at the bottom of each page. Sales headlines are marked with the "stained glass ball" graphic.

We believe that advertising has become too intrusive in our society and especially on the web. In keeping with this belief, we have kept the advertising section separate from the editorial content. On the other hand, we will solicit advertising from vendors who we feel have quality products to offer. We encourage you to check out the advertising section periodically so that we can continue to make ExploreDance.com available without charge.
