Cry Wolf

Cry Wolf is a new play being presented at the 13th Street Repertory Theatre. The play is full of compelling performances and the kind of tortured moral dilemmas one should find in good drama. There is no dancing. Not even a mention in the dialogue. The play is notable from a dance perspective because Jules Helm plays the lead character, a photojournalist from Australia caught up in the ethics of his profession and the pulls of his past. Up until recently Mr. Helm was a competitive ballroom dancer and dance instructor. He is still a dance instructor (and a good one based on comments from his students), but he decided he wanted to expand his artistic range. He has been taking acting classes over the last couple of years. The work has clearly paid off. His portrayal of Nick Grey showed nuance and growth over the course of the two act show.

The show also features Erin Hadley, Koo Abuali, Brian Skornicki and Rachel Venokur who together formed a well balanced ensemble. Cry Wolf was written by Deborah Mulhall and was directed by Erica Ramos.

Cry Wolf is performing Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 50 West 13th Street between 5th and 6th Avenues from October 7 through November 27, 2004. Call 212-675-6677 to reserve your ticket.

If you need to balance your drama intensity with some dance intensity, if you see the show on a Saturday, you might want to wander over to La Nacional for Flamenco Tablao afterwards.
