The Northeast Blackout - Near Lincoln Center, NYC - Some Tango Connections

By Dr. Roberta E. Zlokower
August 14, 2003

I had just washed my hair, but the dryer would not work, nor the lights, nor anything...It was a Blackout! In an adjoining building to mine, I happened on Katie, a NY Tanguera friend, and we took a stroll in the darkening streets nearby. By chance, we bumped into Fazil, whose studio on Eighth Avenue and 46th Street is my venue for private Tango with Carlos De Chey. Then, Ephrain et al, from DanceSport Latin and Ballroom Studios, where I dance Tango at El Recodo on Sunday nights with Carlos Quiroga as Host, but this was not all.

Soon we chanced on Angela, a well-known NY Tanguera, who lives near Lincoln Center, and Katie, Angela, and I compared the Tango scenes in Istanbul, Buenos Aires, and New York, outside Fiorello's Restaurant, as the streets darkened, and hardy New Yorkers seemed unfazed. It was a surreal scene. We could have been at a Tango Milonga, having this conversation, but, instead, we were on Columbus Avenue, in the heat, with no cool air and no lights. I shared my recent Baila Tango in Istanbul stories (the juiciest highlights), and my well-traveled Tango friends shared their observations of Tango in at out of New York, with our positive comments on various Tango styles and coaches.

As the streets blackened, Katie and I ventured home to the gardens of our building, with flashlights in tow. There are never more than six degrees of separation from Tango enthusiasts. Afterwards, I made myself a candlelight dinner and listened to Pugliese on my battery-powered boombox. Blackout, Tango style...
