Megan Fortunato, of the Ailey Company's public relations department, guided me through a wonderful tour today of the new Joan Weill Center for Dance. The Ailey Company was on tour, along with most of the administrators, including Judith Jamison, Artistic Director, but the sparkling new glass building, including The Egg (an oval space for private reflection and intimate gatherings) exuded the energy and enthusiasm of its artists, teachers, students, and office staff. The summer programs will include Company rehearsals, The Ailey Extension (dance workshops and classes for the public in modern, ballroom, Latin, ballet, and more, in an effort to realize Alvin Ailey's desire to "bring dance to all the people"), and more.
